The English and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa before the final, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
