A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
