Monte Cook along with Monte Cook Will Lead Sessions at Dungeon Master University
Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been running deeply engaging experiences where experienced game masters manage fantasy roleplaying games in ancient fortresses in Britain and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are highly favored among forever DMs who infrequently find the moment to participate as players themselves, and they often ask for tips from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improv and creating challenges to handling difficult situations at the table.
In response, the coordinators began designing a organized method to address these questions, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The first session is set for the start of 2026 at an Atlanta campus.
“It's possible to view thousands of YouTube videos on almost every theme and gain significant knowledge, but the concept was that nothing compares to a live, hands-on session together with fellow DMs, where real-time interaction with expert teachers and other game masters who are probably in a similar position and also want to enhance their abilities,” stated the dean of Dungeon Master University.
Available Classes and Ticket Packages
Game masters can opt for tiers ranging from $995 to $2.5K, according to the degree of interaction they desire with the instructors. The starting package includes one of four courses:
- Core Techniques: Covers the essentials of managing a session.
- Story Arc Development: Is dedicated to crafting long-running games.
- Universe Design: Emphasizes the art of setting design.
- Career Building: Aimed at dungeon masters who want to learn more about the gaming industry.
All workshops includes multiple sessions of instruction spread over a weekend.
“The courses are structured so that you depart having usable skills, increased self-assurance, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they go beyond recorded content. These classes that you can attend, absorb insights from, and then go right back home the next week and put into practice in your home campaign.”
Professional Teachers
Many sessions are led by duo of instructors. Universe creation is taught by the founder of Monte Cook Games and a renowned campaign designer, together instructing the craft of setting creation.
Professional development presents four different teachers, such as Elisa Teague, Clint McElroy, and Hunter Fell. The expanded teaching staff is intended to offer targeted guidance to participants with specific goals.
“Various attendees want to launch their own real-play series and present their narratives with the world, several want to publish and write original content,” Carl explained. “Some just want to ask, How do I get to be a DM at a program like D&D in a Castle? What are the skills that I need? Is this achievable?”
Higher Tiers
A $1,500 enhanced option includes access to a introductory event, a starter kit, and a 30-minute office hour appointment with a teacher. This constitutes the inaugural DMU session, though the organizers has previously run Castle Days during breaks between game sessions at their premium gatherings.
“One could practically host an complete event just on one-on-one meetings for expert DMs,” Carl mentioned. “I don’t know if that’s the optimal application of each attendee's hours – In my opinion the formal instruction and the lab work is extremely important – but I suspect it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”
The $2,500 premium option includes an 60-minute private session and the opportunity to lead a session for a small group plus one of the faculty members, who will then provide notes and instruction.
“The purpose is for the teacher to assess any element is interested in: Hey I don’t do well with improv or I get blocked in this kind of combat situation. Could I demonstrate a scenario for you and obtain advice on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl detailed. “Perhaps they want to receive input and information on a particular setting that they’ve been building.”
Coming Developments
Feedback from the first event will help guide upcoming academy workshops. Carl said that possible changes could include increasing consultation time, making it longer to a longer period, or testing alternative workshop formats.
“I anticipate that we conduct these very often,” Carl said. “I truly hope to see numerous academy events in a given year, in different cities, and in various nations. The response has been really terrific. We’re very happy with current developments and I think it would be wonderful to be able to do this in collaboration with big conventions.”
