Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australian ODI Squad to Face Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series facing India, as in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a shock call-up.

Recent Form Result in Exclusion

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI side following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a best innings of forty-seven in his last 10 ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Team Changes

There have been indications of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia search for a solution to their opening batting issues.

Pace Additions and Injury Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after taking a break since excelling for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to seal a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
