Jennifer Lawrence Says Discussing Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Tearing the Nation Apart
The star has revealed that she no longer feels appropriate to voice opinions regarding the Trump government, fearing it could worsen divisive discussions and increase separation across the country.
‘I’m Unsure If It’s Wise’, Says Lawrence
During a discussion, she shared, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I thought I was moving hastily without clear direction. But as we’ve learned, election after election, celebrities have no real impact at all on who people vote for.”
She continued, “What’s the point? I’m just voicing my thoughts on a matter that’s going to add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the nation apart.”
Shifting Views
Lawrence has previously been open about supporting Republican and Democratic candidates over the years. Raised by conservative Republicans in Kentucky, she voted for John McCain in the 2008 election then moving to the Democrats and explaining she understood during Obama’s administration that voting Republican was voting against her personal freedoms as a woman.
Earlier Remarks
In 2015, she commented that Trump winning the presidency might signal “the end of the world” and backed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. During the most recent election, she gave her endorsement to Kamala Harris, “because I think she’s a strong contender and I am confident that she will do whatever she can to defend women’s health rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Jennifer Lawrence was supported by numerous celebrities in her disapproval of Donald Trump as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage stars have over the voting intentions was underscored by Trump’s victory.
“Another four years seems distinct,” noted the actress regarding his administration. “Since he said what he was going to do. We were aware of his actions for the previous administration. He was very clear. And voters made that decision.”
Latest Film
Lawrence is discussing her new film, the filmmaker’s movie in which she plays a young mom who deals with her psychological well-being in rural Montana. At a media event for the film in the film festival, she spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s horrifying. What’s happening is equivalent to a humanitarian crisis and it’s horrible.”
Additional Thoughts
Lawrence added by stating that she was saddened by “the hostility in the conversations of the political landscape right now and how that is going to be accepted to the children today. It’s going to be normal to them that politicians lie.”
The actor sought to redirect anger about the conflict to decision-makers rather than celebrities. “Keep attention on who is responsible,” she said, seen by observers as a reference to the recent commitment endorsed by numerous Hollywood professionals to avoid certain cultural organizations.
Relatable Experiences
Lawrence, who received an Academy Award early in her career for her performance in the acclaimed film, is generating Oscar buzz for her portrayal in the new film. While Lynne Ramsay has denied the plot being interpreted as one of maternal mental health issues and mental illness, she said that she identified with elements of her role’s experience after the delivery of her youngest child, shortly after production wrapped.
“I felt anxiety for my son,” she said, “just picturing every negative outcome, and then second-guessing everything that I was trying. I was seeing a therapist, but I started taking a medication called the prescription and I took it for two weeks and it was effective.”
Professional Experiences
Jennifer Lawrence also spoke of the empowering aspect of shooting revealing sequences in the movie while she was in pregnancy and limited physically.
“There’s a freedom,” she commented, regarding the need to abandon insecurities. “I mean, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between myself and a sex worker? But it isn’t a major concern.”
